Types of leather

The quality of leather used in work gloves can vary considerably, depending on the type of animal, age, and the hide section. Softer leathers come from goats, sheep and deer, while more rigid leathers come from cattle and horses. Pig leather offers a different character due to the noticeable pores in the hide that allow for breathability and additional comfort. Generally, leather from the shoulder and side is thicker and tougher, with the side portion being the premium leather. Because of its thickness, this leather is more suitable for “splitting”. Leather taken from the underside and belly is thinner and softer.

Cuts of leather used for Gloves:

• Grain: The outer side of the hide is smooth—durable, supple, oil and water repellant.
• Split: The inner side of the hide is course as split leather is rougher. It offers a better grip, is more porous and doesn’t protect against moisture like grain leather.
• Side Split: This is the most durable portion of the hide.
• Shoulder Split: Is more economical but less durable.
• Belly Split: Most economical, least durable and is softer.

Tanning is generally used in glove leather:

• Vegetable tanning is the most economical and results in flexible but stiffer leather.
• Chrome tanned leather is softer and stretchier.
